Mess Room Connects - Summer Exhibition
by MESS ROOM, Kent Association for the Blind Art Groups and Peer Arts
1st June - 31st August 2024

Inspired by Draco Roffensis
Draco Roffensis has been designed by our very own Wendy Daws. Made of gold, silver and copper foil sewn onto wire panels, it is suspended above the Nave in Rochester Cathedral allowing services and events to continue underneath.
The artists from Kent Association for the Blind and Peer Arts groups, predominantly with sight loss, though not all, share common goals to support each other by doing something they all love together, feel valued and showcase their extraordinary talents with others through this major public exhibition.
The artists were inspired by Draco Roffensis and the unique surroundings of Rochester Cathedral to create individual artworks accompanied by three group pieces.
Using different creative approaches to the theme with a rich variety of materials, ranging from wood, foil, papier mâché and recycled materials to textiles, and techniques from wood turning, embroidery, sculpting, pyrography and painting to poetry, the artists have set out to put together an artistic response for all to enjoy.
The exhibition is discovered using a map and the individual and group artworks are placed all around Rochester Cathedral for visitors to explore.
“Being part of the art group is wonderful and calming, it gives me so much joy. We’ve all got eyesight challenges and it’s great to express myself with others in similar situations, we help each other and have a laugh at the same time”Cathy, Artist from Kent Association for the Blind Medway Art Group
MESS ROOM has been awarded National Lottery Project Grant funding from Arts Council England. This is to support the MESS ROOM Connect participatory arts programme over the next 12 months.
